Belgium has a top position in the biopharmaceutical sector. Per million inhabitants 13.5 patents are requested. That number is higher then for example in the USA (11.8), the United Kingdom (7.9), France (5.2), Japan (4.4) and Spain (0.5), according to the “Huisarts” based on the numbers of doctor Els Vanheusden of FlandersBio. In 1999 and 2000 the country published 38 biopharmaceutical publications.
