DSM will concentrate more on their core activities: life sciences (food and Pharma) and high quality polymers. Other activities are for sale. The profits of these sales will finance new acquisitions within the core activities, but also to repurchase stock. This was announced by DMS last week.
The divisions that are for sale are the production of melamine, urea, fertilizers and energy, elastomers, ‘special products’ and maleine acid hydrid. A new cluster, Base Chemicals and Materials, will house these activities for now, together with citric acid production. This last division is not for sale, but DSM is looking for a strategic partner.
According to the Board of Directors this decision is a result of the evaluation of the Vision 2010 strategy which was announced two years ago. The transformation gives DSM a strong position to fulfil the needs of the society of tomorrow in the fields of health and nutrition and for the division advanced materials for a better quality of live and healthier environment, according the press release of DSM.
Life sciences and material sciences are multidisciplinary sectors in which the technology platform of DSM in the field of chemistry, process technology, industrial biotechnology and material science join. This creates possibilities for cross-pollination between the different company divisions, as stated in the press release.
