The University of Groningen initiates a centre for research on chemical systems and system chemistry. The research programme of organic chemist Ben Feringa made the foundation of this centre possible. System chemistry distinguishes from traditional chemistry because it approaches complex systems of several molecular components and networks of chemical processes.
This branch of fundamental chemical research is still in development, however in time this research area can benefit the development of new drugs, smart materials and durable chemical processes. The centre will be stationed in the Stralingh Institute for Chemistry of the University of Groningen. In the next five years the University of Groningen will invest five million euro in this project.
