Research & Development draws inspiration from consumers and the market to lead research and idea generation and contribute to product design. Unilever R&D employs 6000 R&D professionals around the world, working in 6 Global Research centres, 15 Global Product Development centres, and regional and country R&D centres in all regions that Unilever operates in.

Unilever R&D in Vlaardingen has a a global scope. Around 1,000 people from over 40 nationalities, are here engaged focussed either on the improvement of existing products and processes or on developing breakthrough new products and processes for Unilever’s brands all over the world. Sergey Melnikov is a skill-base leader, originally coming from Russia now working for the Unilever Food and Health Research Institute. Of the 40 nationalities of Unilever R&D Vlaardingen he says, “Getting scientists from all over the world pays off in technical expertise. It also creates a multicultural atmosphere. Multiculturalism brings about a sort of practical creativity with new solutions to old problems.”

Divergent career possibilities

Dr. Stoyanov has over 12 years experience within the field of colloid and surfactant science, foams, emulsions, interfaces and foams. While working in University of Sofia as academic researcher he has gained extensive interdisciplinary experience through collaborative projects with various international companies

“During that time it became clear to me that while working on industrial research projects one could not develop a novel and fundamental scientific insides is wrong! Actually I discover that for truly understanding and solving big industrial problem requires the science of highest quality.” This was one of the reasons why Dr Stoyanov decided to join the industrial research at Unilever. Dr Stoyanov leads a group of scientists working in the area of emulsion and interfacial design and manages innovation projects delivering new science and technology for the foods industry.
